Picking a route in Cairn means weighing the next handhold against the supplies left in Aava’s backpack. This single-player survival-climbing adventure suits players who want navigation and preparation to drive the challenge, rather than a mountain race with friends. The Game Bakers’ launch announcement sets the goal: help Aava attempt the first ascent of Mount Kami.

Choose your holds and know when to camp

According to The Game Bakers, you decide where to approach a wall and which holds Aava uses; she adapts her hands and feet to the rock. Route choice is therefore part of the climbing itself, not just a decision about which destination to visit. Posture and balance matter alongside the path you pick. Traces of earlier expeditions and the mountain’s inhabitants also give exploration a narrative purpose.

Off the wall, the developer describes a limited-capacity backpack, food to forage, water to find and the need to stay warm through rain, snow and the night. Camping or pushing onward becomes another decision about resources. The description of an ascent taking days refers to the expedition, not a guaranteed real-world completion time. For a player drawn to survival planning, this combination is the appeal; someone seeking uninterrupted forward progress should consider whether those decisions sound enjoyable.

Check your PC and controller setup

Steam’s published PC requirements specify Windows support, not native Mac or Linux builds. The minimum calls for a 64-bit processor and Windows 10, an Intel Core i7-6700 or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X or equivalent, 8 GB RAM, and a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti or Radeon RX 570. An SSD and 10 GB available storage are required; a controller is recommended.

The recommended specification lists an Intel Core i7-10700 or AMD Ryzen 7 3700X or equivalent, plus a GeForce RTX 2060 Super or Radeon RX 5700. It still calls for 8 GB RAM and 10 GB storage on an SSD. These publisher-declared requirements are not benchmarks: they do not establish a particular resolution, frame rate or handheld battery life.

The Steam store listing includes full controller support, Steam Cloud, adjustable difficulty and Save Anytime. Its Steam Deck compatibility status is Verified, covering default controls, controller glyphs, legible interface text and the default configuration. That classification is not native Linux support or a guarantee of a fixed frame rate. The listed single-player mode also makes Cairn a different purchase from a co-op game for a group.

What the released game costs in the U.S.

Steam dates the base game’s release to January 29, 2026; the developer’s January 30 launch announcement confirms it is available, not merely scheduled. On October 9, 2026, the U.S. Steam listing showed a USD base-game price of $29.99 with a zero-percent discount. That is a dated U.S. listing, not a converted price, a worldwide offer or a guaranteed final checkout total. Regional prices, applicable taxes and later promotions can change the amount paid.

The Steam user-review summary offers a useful but limited community signal. On October 9, the all-language query filtered to Steam purchases reported Very Positive across 18,574 reviews, with 17,507 positive and 1,067 negative. Those changing figures describe filtered reviews, not sales or concurrent players. A favorable aggregate does not establish whether the controls or survival demands will suit you.

What is planned for October 29

In its September 20 announcement, The Game Bakers scheduled the free On the Trail: Deep Water DLC for October 29, 2026. It describes three new locations and a limited energy allowance for each climb, with effort and mistakes consuming energy. Gear and route choices are intended to matter within that constraint. Marco will have a different climbing style from Aava, different physical strengths and a newer climbot.

A separate free update is planned alongside the DLC. Its Free Roam mode will let players return to Kami as Aava or Marco and explore the mountain’s paths. As of October 9, these remain announced additions, not available features. The September announcement gives the relevant release plan; the older August target does not mean the expansion has already shipped.

Decide on the climbing, not just the expansion

Consider Cairn if choosing holds, managing supplies and deciding when to rest are the activities you want from a solo adventure. Adjustable difficulty is listed, but the premise still revolves around route finding and survival preparation. If playing with friends is essential, its single-player listing is the more important buying consideration. Judge the released base game on that fit and your PC’s requirements; treat the upcoming free content as a reason to revisit it, not a promise of features or performance available now.
