My Experience with VR Boxing
I trained in real-world boxing for about four months—nothing too serious, just 20–30 minutes twice a week. I never sparred, and after a while, just hitting the heavy bag became boring. That’s when I discovered The Thrill of The Fight (TOTF). I started with the first version, a boxing game where you fight NPC opponents. It felt intense and got harder over time, making it surprisingly similar to real sparring.
Then came The Thrill of The Fight 2 (TOTF2). Although it’s still in early access, the ability to fight real players in 1v1 matches was a game-changer. I jumped in immediately—and trust me, I have no regrets! If you love boxing but can’t spar in real life, this game is an absolute must-buy. 💯

How the Game Works
TOTF2 is all about stepping into the virtual ring for intense boxing matches. Here’s a quick breakdown of how it works:
- Rounds & Breaks: Each match has 3 rounds, lasting about 3 minutes each, with 30-second breaks in between. You’ll need those breaks—this game is exhausting! 🥵
- Ring Size: The ring varies in size. The largest is comparable to a real boxing ring, but depending on settings, you might fight in a smaller or even rectangular ring.
- Opponent Matching: You’ll usually be matched with players from nearby countries, minimizing lag. However, if you’re in a low-player region, matchmaking might take longer.
- Ranking System: The game has an 8-tier ranking system, so you’ll mostly fight opponents at your skill level. Occasionally, you might face someone much stronger or weaker, leading to big ranking gains or losses.
How to Win 🏆
There are two ways to secure victory:
- Knockout (KO) Victory: If you knock down your opponent multiple times in a single round, the fight ends early with a KO. Most players get up 3–4 times before staying down, so KO wins require serious power and precision. 💥
- Decision Victory: If neither player is knocked out, the winner is determined by round victories. Rounds are scored based on:
- More total damage dealt
- More knockdowns (KO attempts have priority over damage)
⚠️ Tip: If you out-damage your opponent but get knocked down more times, you will lose that round. If you win two rounds by damage but lose one by knockdowns, the match ends in a draw.
Controls & Movement 🎮
- Punching: No buttons needed—just throw punches naturally! Your left and right VR controllers act as your hands.
- Blocking & Dodging: Block punches using your hands or move your head to dodge attacks.
- Visual Feedback:
- Big hits make a deep impact sound, and your opponent’s face will show pain.
- When you take damage, a red overlay appears, and severe hits cause a whiteout effect like a flashbang. 😵
- Successful blocks show a blue indicator.
- Movement Options:
- Physical Movement: If you have enough space, you can move around in real life for full immersion.
- Joystick Movement: Use the left joystick to move inside the ring—slower, but it saves energy.
Hitting Harder: Pro Tips 💡
Some areas take more damage than others! Aim for:
- Chin (below the lips, at the edge of the jawline): Best hit with a hook.
- Solar Plexus (just below the bottom rib, center of the torso): Best hit with a rotational straight punch.
Other high-damage hits depend on angles and momentum. Sometimes, a wide hook or an overextended straight punch can deal massive damage. Experiment in the training session with the mannequin to measure your power and accuracy.
🚀 Speed Tip: Faster punches don’t always mean more damage. Precise hits are far more effective than wild swings!
Mastering Your Playstyle 🏅
As you improve, you’ll notice:
- Beginner Ranks are full of crazy, unpredictable styles—hilarious but fun! 🤣
- Higher Ranks feature serious opponents with polished techniques, making fights more intense.
Stamina is Key! 🏃♂️💨
3 rounds may sound short, but it’s incredibly tiring. If you go all-out, you’ll gas out quickly. Instead:
- Balance offense & defense to manage energy.
- If you have great stamina, try overwhelming your opponent with constant pressure!
- Find your style and adapt as you play.
